Supergirl Director Craig Gillespie Details Approach to Comic Inspiration
Director Craig Gillespie has clarified his approach to the upcoming "Supergirl" film. While the movie's initial title, "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," hinted at a direct adaptation of the 2022 critically acclaimed comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, Gillespie indicated that the comic was not the primary focus of his DCU movie. Although he eventually read the source material and incorporated some visuals, the film's narrative direction diverges from a direct adaptation.

DC Studios previously announced a "Supergirl" film, initially titled "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow." This title suggested the movie would adapt the 2022 critically acclaimed comic series from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. Craig Gillespie, known for directing films such as "I, Tonya" and "Cruella," is set to direct the project.
The film's title was subsequently shortened to "Supergirl." Despite the change, fans widely anticipated that the movie would heavily draw from King's expansive narrative and Evely's distinct cosmic artwork.
Gillespie confirmed that he eventually read the "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" comic. He also acknowledged incorporating a few visual elements from the series into the film's production. However, Gillespie stated that the comic was not the central focus of his vision for the DC Universe movie.
