A selection of leading Chromebooks for 2026 has been identified, with the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 emerging as a prominent recommendation for a broad user base. This mid-range model features a 1200p display, extended battery life, and sufficient power for everyday tasks, priced at $479, often available at a discount.
Another notable device, the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514, has been positioned as a top choice for users seeking premium features, despite a recent price adjustment from $699 to $749.
However, some models have experienced substantial price shifts. The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14, previously a top contender, saw its price increase by $250 this spring, raising it to $999. This hike is attributed to a global RAM shortage, making it a less recommendable option at its current cost.
Looking ahead, Google has announced the impending introduction of Googlebook, a new line of laptops specifically built for Gemini. These devices are expected to eventually succeed Chromebooks. Initial models are anticipated from manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, with a release slated for later this year. John Maletis, Google's VP of Product Management for ChromeOS, informed Chrome Unboxed that Chromebooks will continue to receive 10 years of automatic updates. Furthermore, certain newer Chromebook models will reportedly be compatible with Googlebook's new Android-based operating system, enabling a migration path for customers. "A lot of the newer devices, we will be working on an ability for customers to migrate over," Maletis stated.
