Trump Administration Supports xAI Amid Clean Air Act Lawsuit
The Trump administration is reportedly offering assistance to Elon Musk's xAI Corp. as it faces a Clean Air Act lawsuit filed by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The US government has indicated that the lawsuit could jeopardize an xAI data center crucial for powering Grok systems, which are deemed essential for military purposes. The NAACP's legal action, initiated in April, alleges that xAI and its subsidiary MZX Tech have operated numerous gas turbines in Southaven, Mississippi, without the required air permits.

The Trump administration is reportedly offering support to Elon Musk's xAI Corp. in its defense against a Clean Air Act lawsuit initiated by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The US government has expressed concern that the NAACP's legal challenge could jeopardize an xAI data center. This facility reportedly powers Grok systems, which the administration asserts are required by the military.
The NAACP filed the lawsuit against xAI and its subsidiary MZX Tech in April, alleging violations of the Clean Air Act. The core of the complaint centers on the operation of numerous gas turbines in Southaven, Mississippi, without the necessary air permits. Initially, the lawsuit cited 27 unpermitted turbines. However, a June 12 filing by the NAACP indicated that the number had increased to 57 by mid-May, with plans also noted for the installation of two additional units.
According to the lawsuit, the "Colossus Gas Plant" operated by the defendants supplies power to xAI's "Colossus 2" data center, which subsequently supports the "Grok" chatbot's operations. The sustained operation of these gas turbines has reportedly generated both health concerns among residents and numerous noise complaints in the area.
