UFC to Host Historic Event at White House South Lawn, Marking Alliance with Former President Trump
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to host a professional sporting event on the White House's South Lawn, coinciding with the country's 250th anniversary. This marks the first time a professional sporting event will be held at the White House, underscoring a significant alliance between the UFC and former President Donald Trump. The event, branded as 'UFC Freedom 250,' is expected to cost the UFC parent company TKO over $60 million and is scheduled for Flag Day, which is also Trump's 80th birthday. Public reception to the event has been mixed, with a YouGov poll indicating 51% disapproval among Americans.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is preparing to host a significant event on the White House's South Lawn, an initiative UFC CEO Dana White has described as a 'magnum opus' in combat sports history. This event will integrate mixed martial arts (MMA) into the country's 250th-anniversary celebrations and represents the first professional sporting event to be held at the White House.
This move highlights a cultural alliance between the UFC and former President Donald Trump. Following the 2020 election and January 6, 2021, Trump appeared cageside at UFC events, presenting himself to an audience that supported his 2024 campaign. Notable appearances include UFC 287 in Miami in 2023, days after his first indictment, and UFC 302 in Newark, N.J., in 2024, two days after his guilty verdict.
The UFC has reportedly benefited from this association, securing a $7.7 billion rights deal with Paramount and forging partnerships with the FBI and State Department. TKO, the UFC's parent company, projects the White House event, which includes a large fan viewing experience on the Ellipse, to cost over $60 million and incur a paper loss. Despite this, TKO president Mark Shapiro called it "the greatest earned marketing tool of all time."
The event, titled "UFC Freedom 250," features a 92-foot-tall steel "Claw" structure on the South Lawn. The rare Sunday fight deviates from the UFC's usual Saturday schedule and falls on Flag Day, which is also Trump's 80th birthday. The event's branding is linked to Trump's "Freedom 250" concept, and commemorative coins bearing his likeness are available, priced up to nearly $12,000. Trump reportedly controls approximately 1,400 of the 4,300 South Lawn seats. White attributed MMA's presence at the White House to it being "one of the president's favorite sports."
A YouGov poll indicated that 51% of Americans disapprove of UFC Freedom 250, while only 17% approve. A watchdog group has also filed a lawsuit to prevent the event, alleging that a private spectacle on federal parkland was approved without proper review.
Historically, MMA faced significant opposition; in 1996, Senator John McCain advocated for a nationwide ban on the sport, labeling it "human cockfighting." Conversely, Trump was an early supporter, with White stating that Trump was one of the few prominent figures who recognized the UFC's potential when others did not. (Source: Axios)
