UK Founder Loses Anthropic Fable AI Access Due to US Government Order
Sean McDonnell, a UK-based business owner, experienced an abrupt halt in his project when the US government ordered Anthropic to cut foreign access to its Fable 5 AI model. McDonnell, who relies on AI for his web design company Kaizen and SaaS website Consigns, was mid-task when access was revoked. The incident underscored his emphasis on having backup plans to mitigate disruptions caused by AI tool unavailability.
UK business owner Sean McDonnell reported losing access to Anthropic's Fable 5 AI model mid-project following an order from the US government. The directive mandated Anthropic to block foreign access to the model without prior notice.
McDonnell, founder of the web design company Kaizen and the SaaS website Consigns, utilizes AI tools for his operations. He was using Fable 5 to conduct a product review for safety and security when access was instantly withdrawn, displaying a notice that stated, "Claude Fable 5 is currently unavailable."
Despite the sudden cutoff, McDonnell stated that the disruption to his business was not significant due to his proactive preparation. Having learned from past issues, such as Claude Opus 4.6 hitting token limits, he had instructed Fable to create a guide that other AI models could follow. This foresight allowed him to transfer the remaining tasks to alternative AI agents, specifically OpenAI's Codex and Claude 4.8.
McDonnell uses OpenAI's Codex for repetitive, code-intensive work and Claude for tasks related to product aesthetics. While his preparedness prevented a major setback, he noted that the incident did affect his team's momentum, highlighting the importance of anticipating unforeseen circumstances when relying on AI for business operations.
According to Business Insider, McDonnell is 43 and lives in England.
