Ukrainian Troops Offered Up to $10,270 Monthly in New Bonus System

Ukrainian frontline troops can now earn up to 460,000 hryvnias, or approximately $10,270, monthly through a new bonus system tied to combat performance. This potential payout is nearly 30 times the average pre-war salary in Ukraine. The incentives are part of a broader salary and contract overhaul by the defense ministry, aiming to address recruitment challenges and improve morale.

Ukrainian Troops Offered Up to $10,270 Monthly in New Bonus System

Ukrainian troops serving on the front lines are now eligible for monthly earnings of up to 460,000 hryvnias, equivalent to about $10,270, based on their combat performance. This new incentive scheme represents a significant increase, with the maximum payout nearly 30 times the average monthly salary in Ukraine before the conflict began, which was 14,577 hryvnias in January 2022.

The bonuses are a core component of a comprehensive overhaul of Ukraine's military pay and contract system, announced on June 12. This initiative seeks to tackle long-standing issues such as recruitment difficulties and reports of absence without leave (AWOL). The defense ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the new system applies to combat missions and tasks undertaken from the beginning of June, with payouts scheduled for July.

Frontline soldiers receive a base monthly pay of 20,000 hryvnias ($446). Additional daily bonuses are awarded for specific actions: 10,000 hryvnias for each day at a Ukrainian-held position, 20,000 hryvnias for aggressive missions like reconnaissance, evacuation, or recapturing friendly territory, and 40,000 hryvnias for assault operations resulting in a Ukrainian advance. Soldiers can only earn the highest applicable daily bonus, as they do not stack.

Further incentives include 100,000 hryvnias for capturing a Russian soldier, which is split among all directly involved troops, and 15,000 hryvnias for destroying an enemy asset or killing a Russian soldier. Commanders and their teams can earn an extra 30,000 hryvnias monthly for performing combat tasks and 50,000 hryvnias for running operations from command posts, depending on mission time.

The total amount of these payments is capped at 460,000 hryvnias per month. Troops temporarily stationed in rear areas receive a minimum monthly pay of 30,000 hryvnias. Salaries for drone pilots and specialists vary, increasing with proximity to the front lines, up to a maximum of 120,000 hryvnias, with additional bonuses of up to 100,000 hryvnias for combat or command roles.

In conjunction with the pay overhaul, the defense ministry is also implementing a system allowing troops who have gone AWOL to return to the military under top-rated units, immediately receiving gear, meals, and clothing. This measure aims to rectify a loophole that prompted dissatisfied troops to bypass transfer bureaucracy by going AWOL. The aggressive transformation of the Defense Forces began in January under Mykhailo Fedorov, who previously served as the country's minister for digital transformation.

According to Business Insider, the defense ministry stated on June 12 that this is just the initial phase of the comprehensive transformation of Ukraine's Defense Forces.
