Xbox Confirms Gamescom Return Amid Reports of Internal Turmoil and Studio Closures
Xbox is set to participate in Gamescom in August, featuring a playable demo of 'Gears of War: E-Day' and hosting an Xbox FanFest in Cologne to celebrate its 25th anniversary. This comes as reports suggest internal turmoil within the company, including potential staff layoffs and the closure of several development studios, which Xbox has disputed in part. Microsoft leadership has indicated a need for Xbox to become a more sustainable business.

Xbox has confirmed its return to Gamescom in August, where its presence at the Koelnmesse will be headlined by 'Gears of War: E-Day'. The game is expected to be playable on the showfloor. Xbox typically holds a dedicated showcase after Geoff Keighley's Gamescom Opening Night Live event, offering new looks at upcoming titles and Game Pass announcements.
Cologne, Germany, the host city for Gamescom, will also serve as the first stop for the Xbox FanFest event this year. This global tour is part of Xbox's 25th-anniversary celebration.
Despite these public engagements, reports indicate significant internal challenges for Xbox. Microsoft is reportedly preparing for staff layoffs and the closure of multiple development studios, although Xbox has disputed some claims. Analysts have suggested that upcoming Xbox exclusives, such as 'Gears of War: E-Day' and 'Clockwork Revolution', might face difficult prospects, a claim also disputed by Xbox.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has alluded to upcoming changes, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has stated that Xbox needs to evolve into a "sustainable" business. Studios like Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory are reportedly facing potential closures, with possibilities of spinning off from Xbox.
The situation appears particularly challenging for Ninja Theory, which recently announced its new game, 'Senua'. According to Stephen Totilo's Game File, Microsoft had already planned to split from Ninja Theory, and the decision to reveal 'Senua' during the Xbox Games Showcase was reportedly made to attract investor interest.
