Agility Robotics Opens Silicon Valley Hub, Prioritizes Culture Over High Salaries for AI Talent

Agility Robotics, known for its Digit humanoid robot, has opened a 60,000-square-foot research and training facility in Fremont, California. This new Silicon Valley hub is expected to accommodate nearly 200 existing and new employees across hardware engineering, AI and machine learning, and customer operations support.

Jonathan Hurst, cofounder and chief robot officer of Agility Robotics, stated that the company has no interest in participating in the escalating competition for top AI and robotics talent. Hurst indicated that Agility Robotics prefers candidates who fit the company's culture and mission, rather than what he described as "coin-operated employees" often seen in current bidding wars for talent.

The Fremont facility, located about 15 miles east of Palo Alto, positions Agility Robotics near a significant pool of technical talent and other major robotics companies, including Meta's hardware R&D team and Tesla's Fremont center. Despite the intense competition for AI talent, which has led to some nine-figure bonuses and high base salaries at other firms, Agility Robotics maintains its strategy.

To attract talent, Hurst highlights the company's progress, noting that Agility Robotics was among the first to commercially deploy humanoid robots. The company began commercial operations with its bipedal Digit robot in 2024, deploying it across manufacturing, distribution, and logistics. Digit has accumulated over 65,000 hours of work, primarily performing tasks such as picking up and moving bins.

Agility Robotics plans to go public via a SPAC later this year. The company has also reported over $300 million in conditional multiyear orders for its next-generation Digit V5.
