Allbirds Rebrands as Smartbird, Pivots to AI Under New CEO Nadia Carlsten
The company formerly known as Allbirds announced a significant strategic shift, rebranding as Smartbird and pivoting from footwear manufacturing to becoming an AI infrastructure provider. On Wednesday, the company also named Nadia Carlsten as its new CEO, replacing Joe Vernachio, and she will join the company's board. Carlsten previously led Amazon Web Services’ quantum computing center and was CEO of AI company DCAI. The market responded positively to the announcements, with Smartbird's stock (BIRD) increasing approximately 45% midday and closing up 37% on Wednesday. This change follows the prior sale of its footwear-related assets for nearly $40 million, marking a complete transformation for the company.

The company previously known as Allbirds has undergone a significant transformation, rebranding itself as Smartbird and shifting its core business to become an AI infrastructure provider. This strategic pivot marks a departure from its former identity as a footwear maker.
Simultaneously, Smartbird announced the appointment of Nadia Carlsten as its new Chief Executive Officer. Carlsten will also join the company's board. She succeeds Joe Vernachio, who had taken the helm of the company in March 2024. Carlsten brings experience from her previous role leading Amazon Web Services’ quantum computing center and serving as CEO of AI company DCAI.
These announcements were met with a favorable reaction from the markets on Wednesday. Shares of BIRD stock surged approximately 45% midday and concluded the trading day up 37%. Despite this immediate gain, the stock has experienced a 50% decline over the past year. Smartbird had previously divested its footwear-related assets for nearly $40 million, a move that predated its current rebrand and AI pivot.
Reflecting on the company's evolving financial landscape, its market capitalization stands at around $50 million, a stark contrast to its previous valuation of $4 billion at one point. Carlsten stated, "Smartbird is entering the market at a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI infrastructure. There is a clear opportunity to meet the growing need for enterprise-grade AI infrastructure that delivers control and performance without the capital and operational burden of hardware ownership."
