Harry Kane Equals Gary Lineker's England World Cup Goal Record
Harry Kane has matched Gary Lineker's all-time goals record for England at World Cups, reaching 10 goals after scoring a double in a recent match against Croatia. The England captain's goals came from a retaken penalty and a header in Dallas. This achievement places him level with Lineker, who scored his World Cup goals across the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. Kane previously secured the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup.
Harry Kane has equaled Gary Lineker’s record for England goals at World Cups, bringing his total tally to 10. The England captain achieved this milestone during a match against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday, scoring twice in the first half.
Kane's first goal was a retaken penalty. His initial attempt was saved, but a VAR review found that Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic had moved off his line too early, and defender Josko Gvardiol had encroached into the penalty area. Croatia's Martin Baturina then equalized with a long-range effort.
Shortly after, Kane headed home a corner from Declan Rice, marking his second goal of the match. Croatia responded again, with Peter Musa scoring a volley just before half-time. Kane, now 32, has played in three World Cups, scoring six goals in Russia in 2018—earning him the Golden Boot—and two in Qatar in 2022, a tournament where he also had a penalty miss against France.
Lineker's 10 World Cup goals were scored across the 1986 and 1990 tournaments, where he won the Golden Boot in 1986 during England's run to the quarter-finals. Kane is currently six goals shy of the all-time World Cup leading goalscorer record, which is jointly held by Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi, with Messi recently adding a hat-trick against Algeria.
