Apple Prepares Second-Generation iPhone Air for Spring 2027 Release

Apple Inc. is preparing to launch a second-generation iPhone Air in spring 2027, according to individuals familiar with the matter. The new model, internally code-named V62, is designed to enhance the appeal of the slimmer iPhone variant.

Current prototypes of the V62 include a second rear camera, which will enable ultrawide-angle photography. Efforts are also underway to improve the device's battery life, though it remains unclear whether this will stem from a larger battery or efficiency gains within its compact design. The updated Air is expected to be powered by a version of the A20 Pro processor, the same chip slated for release in iPhones this fall.

Advanced testing of the device is currently underway at Apple. The company views enhancements to the camera system and battery life as key opportunities to improve the Air, addressing customer feedback regarding the current single-lens camera's limitations.

This release is part of Apple's broader strategy to expand its $210 billion iPhone business with new designs. It also signifies a shift in Apple's typical product release schedule. While the company traditionally unveils its main iPhones in September, this fall's lineup will reportedly focus on higher-end models like the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and a new foldable version. A new standard iPhone 18 is then expected alongside the refreshed Air approximately six months later.

This staggered approach to iPhone releases is intended to distribute revenue more evenly across the calendar year and enhance Apple's competitive standing against rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co., which introduces major new smartphones at various points throughout the year. The initial iPhone Air, released in September 2025, serves to differentiate Apple's offerings, although it has not yet become one of the highest-volume iPhones.
