England winger Bukayo Saka has confirmed he will continue to "take the gamble" on his fitness as he participates in the national team's World Cup campaign. Saka has been managing an Achilles injury that impacted the conclusion of his domestic season with Arsenal, leading him to play through discomfort.
Saka, who sustained the injury in March and subsequently missed a month of action, including an international window, stated he is now "ready to go" for England's Group L opener. The match is scheduled for Wednesday against Croatia in Dallas. He revealed that he had taken a fitness risk to feature in Arsenal's Premier League and Champions League run-in.
"As players, it's the biggest gamble, especially if you're not feeling your sharpest," Saka commented. He added that he feels "a lot better than I did in March." Saka further acknowledged the crucial role of both Arsenal's and England's medical teams, stating they have "managed me amazingly and helped me get back on the pitch" since March.
In the event Saka is not deemed fit enough to start Wednesday's match, his Arsenal teammate Noni Madueke is a potential option to begin on the right wing. Saka described his relationship with Madueke as "quite unique," noting that they are close friends and direct competitors for the same position. He emphasized their mutual support, stating, "Noni is like my brother on and off the pitch. We push each other, we speak every day and we have that mutual respect and we want each other to do well."
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, Saka affirmed he would fully support anyone playing in his position, including Madueke, stating, "we’re all here on behalf of England and to make England win and we’re all great talents."
