Colombian music icons Carlos Vives and Silvestre Dangond delivered a vallenato performance at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on Tuesday, June 16. The concert served as a celebration preceding the Colombian National Team's FIFA World Cup 2026 debut, scheduled for Wednesday, June 17. The lineup for the "Colombian night" also featured the trio ChocQuibTown.
The event capped several hours of festivities for the Colombian community in Mexico, drawing both residents and visitors. Celebrations commenced earlier that Tuesday evening with a large gathering at the iconic Ángel de la Independencia monument, which was adorned with Colombian tricolor flags, yellow jerseys, and traditional vueltiao hats. Carlos Vives addressed the crowd, noting the visible flags and jerseys and the presence of people from across the Americas, Hispanic America, Ibero-America, and Europe.
Vives' set included hits such as "Volví a Nacer," "La Bicicleta" (originally with Shakira), "Canción Bonita" (originally with Ricky Martin), "Tuyo y Nada Más," and "Ella Es Mi Fiesta." He later performed "Nota de Amor" with ChocQuibTown, followed by a medley of classics like "La Hamaca Grande" and "La Gota Fría." Vives then joined Silvestre Dangond on stage to sing "Matilde Lina," "Jaime Molina," and "La Cañaguatera," a classic vallenato folk song.
Silvestre Dangond initiated the evening's musical festivities with a selection of Colombian folklore, featuring songs such as "Ya No Me Duele Más," "Dile," "La Difunta," "Lo Ajeno Se Respeta," and "A Blanco y Negro." He dedicated his hit "Cásate Conmigo" to a couple in the stadium who had requested the song for a re-proposal. Despite rain in Mexico City, the audience's enthusiasm remained high. Vives encapsulated the spirit of the event, stating, "Today we are one family, music and soccer, and we’re dancing cumbia."
The Colombian National Team is set to make its FIFA World Cup 2026 debut on Wednesday night at Estadio Ciudad de México (formerly Estadio Azteca, now Estadio Banorte) against Uzbekistan. According to Billboard, the concert coincided with the release of Billboard Español’s latest cover story, which featured Vives, Juanes, Camilo, and Fonseca.
