DR Congo Earns Historic World Cup Point in Draw Against Portugal
The Democratic Republic of Congo secured their first-ever point at a World Cup finals, drawing 1-1 with Portugal in their Group K match in Houston on Wednesday. Yoane Wissa's header for DR Congo canceled out an early goal from Portugal's Joao Neves. The match marked Cristiano Ronaldo's record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance, though he was largely a peripheral figure and missed key chances. This historic achievement for DR Congo occurred despite their preparations being disrupted by an Ebola outbreak.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) made history on Wednesday by securing their first-ever point at a World Cup finals, drawing 1-1 with Portugal in their Group K opener in Houston.
Portugal initially took the lead in the sixth minute when Joao Neves powered home a header from Pedro Neto's cross. However, DR Congo, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, equalized in first-half added time. Yoane Wissa rose unmarked to head past Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa, scoring his country's inaugural World Cup goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, began his record-equalling sixth World Cup but reportedly had a disappointing performance, failing to significantly impact the match. Despite chances created by Francisco Conceicao, Ronaldo sent the ball wide of the post on two occasions. Other notable moments included Joao Cancelo's overhead kick being disallowed for offside and DR Congo veteran striker Cedric Bakambu hitting the near post.
Portugal's Prime Minister Luis Montenegro presented some players with wristbands in tribute to their late teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last year. DR Congo's historic achievement came despite their preparations for the tournament being disrupted by an Ebola outbreak in their home country.
