FDA Approves Third Over-the-Counter Naloxone Nasal Spray, Rextovy
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Rextovy, a 4-milligram naloxone nasal spray, as the third over-the-counter (OTC) option for emergency opioid overdose treatment. This decision, announced on Tuesday, aims to enhance accessibility and potentially reduce costs associated with opioid overdose reversal. Rextovy will be available for direct purchase by consumers in various retail locations and online.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Tuesday the approval of Rextovy, a 4-milligram naloxone nasal spray, for over-the-counter (OTC) use. This marks the third naloxone nasal spray available without a prescription, intended for the emergency treatment of opioid overdose.
The agency stated that this approval could play a significant role in saving lives and decreasing healthcare costs by making the life-saving medication more readily accessible. Naloxone is a medication designed to rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
Consumers will be able to purchase Rextovy directly from pharmacies, convenience stores, and online platforms. This expanded availability is expected to facilitate quicker intervention during an opioid overdose emergency.
According to The Hill, the FDA's move is part of broader efforts to combat the ongoing opioid crisis by ensuring that critical overdose reversal tools are widely available to the public.
