Concurrently, the company introduced Wear OS 7 for smartwatches and the June Pixel Drop, featuring a range of new AI-powered capabilities for Pixel devices. Google has officially launched Android 17, its latest mobile operating system, making it available for Pixel phone owners. The company also released Wear OS 7 for smartwatches and the June Pixel Drop, which introduces a suite of new features across its ecosystem. Android 17 is slated to roll out to other Android devices throughout the year.
Android 17 brings several new functionalities designed to enhance user experience. The 'Bubbles' feature allows users to open any mobile app as a pop-up, facilitating easier multitasking, with a new Bubble bar to organize recent bubbles. 'Screen Reactions' enables dual webcam and screen recording, letting users record via their selfie camera while capturing their phone screen simultaneously. For foldable Android devices, a new gaming mode transforms one half of the screen into a digital gamepad, with the game displayed on the other half. The operating system also includes enhanced security and parental control capabilities, such as more location-sharing controls, Live Threat Detection, Advanced Protection improvements, and a "Mark as lost" feature in Find Hub. Parents can now set screen time limits and filter content without needing to link a Google Account.
The June Pixel Drop focuses heavily on artificial intelligence. 'Gemini Omni' allows users to edit videos through a conversational AI chatbot, capable of remixing images and videos or generating content from text prompts. Users can also create custom AI avatars that replicate their appearance and voice for integration into various scenes. Google is also integrating 'Lyria 3', its latest music generation model, into Pixel phones, enabling users to choose music style, tempo, or use an image to inspire a song. Minor upgrades include speech-to-voice translation with the AudioLM feature for Pixel 10am devices, and Android Quick Share for AirDrop-like capabilities with iPhones, available on Pixel 9a and Pixel 8a. The 'Take a Message' feature, which offers Custom Greetings and voicemail transcriptions, has rolled out to all compatible Pixel devices in the U.S. Pixel phones will also receive all new features introduced with Android 17.
Wear OS 7 introduces new features for Android smartwatches. 'Android Live Updates' allows users to view real-time updates for sports scores, food delivery times, and workouts directly from their wrist. Users can also control other Android devices from their smartwatch, accessing media playing on headphones or home speakers, and instantly viewing photos snapped with smartglasses. A significant safety enhancement is 'Emergency Sharing,' where a Pixel Watch detecting a fall, car accident, or loss of pulse will automatically contact emergency services and notify the user's emergency contacts.
