IT Leaders' Confidence in AI Deployment Declines Amid Production Realities
Confidence among IT leaders regarding their organizations' AI deployment maturity has significantly dropped by 17 points in six months, from 40% to 23%. This decline is primarily observed in organizations that have transitioned AI agents from pilot projects into full production environments, revealing a more accurate understanding of the complexities involved. Despite this shift in self-assessment, 84% of organizations still plan to expand their use of AI in IT operations within the next two years, indicating a focus on responsible scaling rather than a retreat from AI adoption.
A recent survey indicates a notable decrease in IT leaders' confidence regarding their organizations' maturity in AI deployment. Six months ago, 40% of IT leaders described their organizations as mature in AI deployment, a figure that has now fallen to 23%. This shift is detailed in JumpCloud's Q3 2026 trends report, which surveyed 800 IT leaders across the U.S. and U.K.
The reduction in confidence is attributed to organizations moving AI agents from controlled pilot environments into live production systems. This transition exposes new challenges, particularly in governance and accountability, that were not apparent during earlier, less complex pilot phases. The data suggests that this recalibration reflects a more realistic assessment of what AI operations genuinely require, rather than a loss of faith in AI itself.
Despite the drop in confidence, a significant majority, 84% of organizations, plan to expand their use of AI in IT operations over the next 6 to 24 months. This indicates a commitment to AI adoption, coupled with a growing recognition of the need for robust governance infrastructure to support AI agents operating autonomously within real systems.
A critical challenge identified is the governance of non-human identities, referring to AI agents. Only 21% of organizations have non-human identity governance in place, despite non-human identities outnumbering human users in 83% of organizations. These unmanaged AI agents, termed "Zombie Agents," often lack formal records, named owners, defined access scopes, or offboarding processes, leading to accumulation of permissions and potential security risks.
Organizations that have successfully navigated these challenges typically consolidate their IT environments, treat AI agents as governed identities, and prioritize measuring actual AI production outcomes. Such organizations are reportedly five times more likely to report no barriers to expanding their AI agents compared to the average organization. The current drop in confidence, concentrated among organizations actively engaging with AI in production, is viewed as a positive development, fostering higher standards for responsible AI implementation.
