Tottenham Hotspur Explores Deal for Newcastle Midfielder Sandro Tonali
Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly joined several clubs interested in acquiring Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Manager Roberto de Zerbi, identified in the report as Spurs manager, has been a long-time admirer of the Italian player, with Tottenham exploring the financial aspects of a potential deal for the 26-year-old. Manchester City and Arsenal have also shown interest, though no formal approaches have been made to Newcastle.
Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly joined the list of clubs interested in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. The player, who signed with Newcastle from AC Milan for £55 million in 2023, is effectively contracted until 2030, having signed a new deal during a 10-month betting ban to repay the club's faith.
Manager Roberto de Zerbi, identified in the report as Spurs manager, is said to be a long-time admirer of Tonali, having previously targeted him while in charge of Sassuolo. Tottenham has reportedly explored the financial implications of a deal for the 26-year-old midfielder. Manchester City and Arsenal have also previously shown interest in Tonali, though no club has yet made a formal approach to Newcastle.
Newcastle United's chief executive, David Hopkinson, has indicated that the club will only trade players on their own terms. The club recently sold forward Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3 million and Alexander Isak to Liverpool for £125 million. The current market conditions, including Nottingham Forest rejecting a £120 million offer for Elliot Anderson and West Ham seeking up to £80 million for Mateus Fernandes, could potentially favor Newcastle if a bidding war for Tonali ensues.
Tottenham's financial standing shows they generated £230 million more in revenue than Newcastle in their most recent financial accounts, allowing them to raise their salary ceiling. Spurs chief executive Vinai Venkatesham confirmed this change in approach, stating the club needs "experience, leadership and also that kind of physical robustness."
Tonali's qualities, including his technical skills and work rate, are noted. In his 2024-25 league campaign for Newcastle, he won possession 109 times, made 34 interceptions, and performed 1,308 high-pressure movements. Head coach Eddie Howe previously expressed his admiration for the player, calling him an "all-rounder."
Despite the player's value, Newcastle is adapting to become a more strategic seller as part of its rebuild. A substantial offer, potentially up to £100 million, might be considered, particularly if Tonali's form, which has reportedly dipped, continues. However, at this early stage of the transfer window, such an offer remains speculative.
According to Yahoo Sports Soccer, Tottenham Hotspur is currently exploring a potential deal for Sandro Tonali.
