VAR Orders Harry Kane Penalty Retake in England vs. Croatia World Cup Match
England was awarded a penalty in their World Cup opening game against Croatia after Luka Modric fouled Noni Madueke. Harry Kane's initial penalty attempt was saved by Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. However, VAR intervened, ordering a retake due to defender Josko Gvardiol's encroachment into the penalty area before Kane struck the ball and his subsequent first contact with it after the save. Kane successfully converted the retaken spot-kick.
England received a penalty in their World Cup opener against Croatia following a foul by Luka Modric on Noni Madueke inside the box.
Harry Kane's first penalty attempt was saved by Croatia's Dominik Livakovic. The referee, Clement Turpin, paused the game after the save to announce that the penalty would be retaken, a decision made after VAR intervention.
Replays showed Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol encroached inside the penalty area before Kane struck the ball. Gvardiol was also the first player to make contact with the ball following Livakovic’s save. Additionally, replays suggested Livakovic may have been slightly off his line when the penalty was taken, another potential reason for a retake.
Kane stepped up for the second attempt, choosing a more direct run-up and striking the ball confidently. He successfully dispatched the penalty to the same side where Livakovic had made the initial save.
This success provided relief for Kane, whose previous World Cup game, against France four years ago, concluded with a critical penalty miss that led to England's exit at the quarter-final stage. The Bayern Munich striker scored 10 penalties in the Bundesliga this season, contributing to his total of 36 goals.
