TTAP Rejects PTI's Claims on Notice for Adiala Jail Protest
The TTAP (Tribal Areas Political Parties) spokesperson has rejected claims by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership that they were not given prior notice of a planned 10,000-person demonstration outside Adiala Jail. PTI Parliamentary Leader Shahid Khattak stated the party was not informed by National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai about the gathering. Conversely, PTI founder Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, reportedly claimed Achakzai had approached her regarding a sit-in and that a 3pm-7pm protest had been decided.
A dispute has emerged between the Tribal Areas Political Parties (TTAP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding a proposed 10,000-person demonstration outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where PTI founder Imran Khan is incarcerated.
PTI Parliamentary Leader in the National Assembly, Shahid Khattak, claimed that Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai did not inform the PTI leadership about the planned gathering. Khattak stated that if informed, the party could have mobilized supporters.
Earlier, Aleema Khan, Imran Khan's sister, reportedly said that Achakzai had approached her with the idea of gathering 10,000 people and that a sit-in from 3pm to 7pm had been decided.
However, TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai rejected Khattak's assertions. Yousafzai claimed that PTI leaders and members had repeatedly requested Achakzai to announce a specific date and time for a protest outside Adiala Jail, believing a fixed schedule would aid in mobilizing supporters.
Yousafzai further stated that Achakzai conveyed the proposal to Aleema Khan, who reportedly agreed to a predetermined protest time. According to TTAP, a joint parliamentary meeting of the Senate and National Assembly on June 11, attended by PTI's parliamentary leadership including Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Shahid Khattak, was informed that Aleema Khan had endorsed the scheduled protest proposal.
Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 5, 2023, and is serving a 14-year sentence in connection with a corruption case. Despite an Islamabad High Court order allowing him twice-a-week meetings with family and lawyers, he has reportedly been restricted from seeing visitors for several months.
Concerns about Imran Khan's health, specifically an eye ailment, have also been raised, with the opposition accusing the government of lacking transparency regarding his treatment and access to personal physicians. These allegations have been denied by the government.
