Dire Wolf Games is developing "War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time," a new board game inspired by Robert Jordan’s 15-book fantasy series. The game is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.
"War of the Dragon" supports 2-4 players, who choose to play as either the forces of Light, preparing for the final battle by gaining allies, or the forces of Shadow, spreading corruption and aiming to revive the powerful Forsaken.
The game offers two distinct modes: a "Heroes" game variant designed for up to four players, and an "Epic Mode" for two players where participants control armies rather than individual characters. Both modes provide an asymmetric experience, with each side playing differently. Core mechanics include area control and tableau building, where players complete missions, expand influence, recruit allies, move units, and manipulate the One Power and Weave.
According to Andy Clautice, Director of Design at Dire Wolf Digital, the game's narrative begins with events from Book 4, "The Shadow Rising," following the taking of the Stone of Tear. This point marks an escalation in the conflict, making the entire world a battlefield. The game progresses through the rest of the series, culminating in The Last Battle, allowing for a "new turn of the Wheel" where events can unfold differently from the books. Scott Martins, President of Dire Wolf Digital, noted that while the game incorporates elements like tableau building and light character progression, it has a different structural foundation compared to other Dire Wolf titles.
The game's estimated delivery date is next year.
