Bernardo Silva Confirms Real Madrid Move After Manchester City Departure
Portugal international Bernardo Silva has officially confirmed his move to Real Madrid on an initial two-year contract. The transfer is set to commence at the start of the 2026/27 season, following the expiration of his current agreement with Manchester City. Silva departs Manchester City after a nine-year tenure, during which he secured 20 major trophies. Manchester City has reportedly targeted Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson as a potential replacement, with initial bids for the player being rejected.
Bernardo Silva will join Real Madrid on a two-year contract, with the move taking effect from the start of the 2026/27 season. Both Real Madrid and Manchester City have formally announced the pending arrival of the 31-year-old midfielder at the Bernabeu.
Silva leaves Manchester City after an illustrious nine-year spell, having played a key role in the club's dominant era under Pep Guardiola. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the Portuguese international made 460 appearances, scoring 76 goals and contributing to 20 major honours. His trophy haul includes six Premier League titles, five Carabao Cups, three FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League crown. In the 2025/26 campaign, he captained Manchester City to a domestic cup double, lifting the Carabao Cup against Arsenal and the FA Cup against Chelsea at Wembley.
Manchester City's sporting director, Hugo Viana, is reportedly seeking midfield reinforcements and has identified Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest as a top priority. City has seen two bids rejected by Nottingham Forest for Anderson, with the most recent offer reportedly standing at £106 million plus an additional £15 million in add-ons. Should a deal be agreed, it could establish a new British record transfer fee and potentially make Anderson the third-most expensive footballer of all time.
During his career with Manchester City, Bernardo Silva faced Real Madrid 13 times, scoring four goals in those encounters. This includes a notable double in the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League second-leg win against Los Blancos.
