The match saw Senegal demonstrate a stronger performance in the first half. However, France significantly improved in the second period, with their prowess ultimately proving decisive.
Kylian Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, scoring his 57th goal for France, a national record-equalling achievement. The goal came from a through ball by Michael Olise, which Mbappe swept past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy without looking up, unlocking the Senegalese defense.
Substitute Bradley Barcola extended France's lead. Later, deep into added time, Mbappe scored his second goal of the match with a powerful strike from outside the box, moments after Ibrahim Mbaye netted a consolation goal for Senegal. This 58th goal for his country saw Mbappe surpass Olivier Giroud's national scoring record.
Mbappe's two goals also elevated his total World Cup goal count to 15, placing him alongside football legends such as Brazil's Ronaldo and West Germany's Gerd Mueller. Only Germany's Miroslav Klose holds more tournament goals, with 16.
