Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford has offered reassurances regarding the club's future following Pep Guardiola's departure from the Etihad Stadium. Speaking to reporters ahead of England’s first match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Croatia, Trafford addressed the transition period and the impending managerial change.
Trafford, 23, praised Guardiola, calling him "an incredible manager, probably one of the best, if not the best to ever manage." He acknowledged that Guardiola’s exit was "sad" for many players due to his success.
Despite his own uncertain role at the club, Trafford emphasized that players would adapt to the new manager. He stated that "whatever happens next season in terms of the manager... all the players work under that manager, it’s just how football goes." He added that "everyone moves on at certain points" in football.
Trafford has reportedly struggled for playing time under Guardiola and is considered a likely candidate for a loan or permanent departure this summer. Clubs such as Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Tottenham are said to be interested in the City academy graduate. Gianluigi Donnarumma is currently established as the first-choice goalkeeper.
Enzo Maresca’s expected arrival at the Etihad Stadium is anticipated to be finalized before pre-season begins. Manchester City's hierarchy is reportedly engaged in compensation discussions with Chelsea regarding Maresca's exit, a process Trafford seemingly alluded to when noting that nothing has been officially confirmed.
Senior figures within the squad are reportedly projecting calm during this period of managerial change, according to Yahoo Sports Soccer.
