Seattle's Landscape: A Blend of Glacial Sculpting and Human Transformation

The city's hills and basins were formed by the advance and retreat of glaciers during the last ice age, with ice masses up to 3,300 feet thick covering the region. Over time, human endeavors have significantly reshaped Seattle's topography, including leveling hills, reclaiming tideflats, and undertaking major waterfront infrastructure projects. The fundamental contours of Seattle's landscape and its aquatic surroundings are attributed to the advance and retreat of glaciers during the last ice age. Approximately 18,000 to 16,000 years ago, the Puget lobe of the Cordilleran ice sheet covered the area with a mass of ice reaching up to 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) in thickness. This glacial activity scoured the basins that now contain Puget Sound and the region's lakes. The glaciers also created distinctive landforms such as drumlins, which are elongated mounds of glacial debris running north-south, contributing to some of Seattle's notorious hills. Large glacial erratics, like the Wedgwood Rock, were also deposited in the region from more northerly locations.
In more recent history, human activities have significantly reworked the topography. Notable projects include the leveling of Denny Hill, situated north of downtown, and the filling of tideflats at the mouth of the Duwamish River, south of downtown. These efforts created approximately 1,300 acres of new land, where professional sports stadiums now stand. The astronaut's photo was taken after the completion of several development projects initiated in 2010, which updated downtown waterfront infrastructure, including a new ferry dock and terminal, a rebuilt seawall, and a tunnel to replace an above-ground highway.
Further alterations to the region's waterways are also apparent. In the 1910s, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed canals on either side of Lake Union to connect Puget Sound with Lake Washington. The Montlake Cut, completed in 1916, linked Lake Washington to Lake Union, and the Ballard Locks began regulating watercraft movement between the freshwater lakes and tidal Puget Sound. This project led to a 9-foot (3-meter) drop in Lake Washington's water level. Today, Seattle's waters support diverse uses, including container ships, cruise ships, ferries, floatplanes, and recreational craft.
Seattle's nickname, the "Emerald City," reflects its abundant greenery, with pockets of old-growth forest containing centuries-old trees like Douglas fir, Western red cedar, and Western hemlock within city limits.
