Wyclef Jean, a three-time Grammy-winning artist, recently made his third major appearance at the FIFA World Cup, performing at two events. On June 11, Jean partnered with Canadian folk singer-songwriter AHI at the FIFA Fan Festival™ in Toronto, where they performed their new collaboration, “Chosen.” Less than a week later, on June 15, Jean delivered a set at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, celebrating his 1997 LP, *Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival*.
Jean's previous World Cup anthems include “Hips Don’t Lie,” performed with Shakira at the 2006 closing ceremony, and “Dar um Jeito,” the official 2014 FIFA World Cup anthem created with Carlos Santana, Alexandre Pires, and Avicii. Jean, who identifies as being "obsessed with football" and names Pelé as his favorite player, noted the significance of this year's World Cup, including Haiti's first appearance since 1974.
During his New York performance, Jean incorporated elements of Haitian Carnival, aiming to introduce its culture and historical figures, such as Bawon Samdi, to a wider audience. The celebration also served as a preview for the upcoming 30th anniversary of *The Carnival* LP next year.
Looking ahead, Jean announced the “Quantum Leap” series, a project that will feature seven albums spanning seven different genres, all to be released within a single year. The first installment, a hip-hop LP titled *Clef Notes*, is set for release on June 26. This album will include collaborations with artists such as Rapsody on “1994 – Boom Bap,” Lil Wayne and Andra Day on “1997 – GBTC,” and G Herbo on “2010 – Mr. October.” The track “Mr. October” was released on May 29.
